The iPhone Air has no SIM tray. China’s three state carriers will put an eSIM on the mainland model. That leaves Hong Kong owners with a blunt question: does the Hong Kong phone still work north of the border?
Yes. Just not the way people hope.
The short version
You cannot walk into a China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom store and stick a mainland eSIM on a Hong Kong iPhone. Apple’s own support page is explicit: mainland carrier eSIMs only go on phones bought in the mainland. Its travel eSIM guide repeats it. An October 2025 store test reported by IT Home and unwire.hk failed at the IMEI check on a Hong Kong iPhone Air. Commenters blamed missing mainland eSIM certificates; unconfirmed, but the result matches Apple’s policy.
The rule runs both ways. A mainland-model iPhone can add a local eSIM abroad, but “eSIMs from non-China mainland carriers can’t be installed while located in China mainland.”
So keep the Hong Kong phone. Change how you connect.
Your options, ranked
1. Roam on your Hong Kong eSIM
Simplest. Your Hong Kong number keeps calls, SMS and OTP codes. Buy a China or Greater Bay Area roaming pass. Data routes through your Hong Kong carrier, which is why WhatsApp, Google and Instagram usually keep working without a VPN — Trip.com’s 2026 plan roundup makes the same point.
Prices move. In October 2025, unwire.hk had several daily roaming passes around HK$15/day. Check your own carrier app before you go, and skip pay-as-you-go roaming unless you enjoy pain.
2. Add a travel data eSIM
If roaming is pricey, drop a data-only travel eSIM on as a second line. Keep the Hong Kong line for SMS and iMessage.
- Global apps: Airalo says its China, Asia and Global eSIMs route traffic through gateways outside the mainland, so no VPN needed on that data. Hotel Wi-Fi is a different story. Other brands claim similar routing — verify before you buy.
- Hong Kong carriers: China Mobile Hong Kong sells a Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong & Macau travel data eSIM. Its June 2026 guide lists 1GB–30GB packs valid 30 days. Packs that include Hong Kong data need Hong Kong real-name registration first.
A travel eSIM is usually data only. No +86 number.
3. Get a mainland number from your Hong Kong carrier
Banks and a lot of mainland apps want a real-name +86 number. Your Hong Kong carrier can hang one off the line you already have — still fine on an eSIM-only phone.
- csl China HK 1-Card-2-Number adds a China Unicom secondary number. You need a Hong Kong ID and Home Return Permit in the same name, age 18+, one number per person. Since 27 January 2025, new applicants need two years on a csl plan and credit-card direct debit. Listed packs: HK$29 / $39 / $49 a month for 500MB / 1GB / 2GB of mainland and Macau data.
- SmarTone 智2通 is HK$18 a month for monthly-plan customers. Good for receiving SMS and calls. SmarTone’s FAQ: submit a Home Return Permit (valid ≥3 months) and a photo within 14 days; result by SMS in about two days. Outside Hong Kong, roaming on the main line must be on.
- Others: 3HK, China Mobile Hong Kong, China Unicom (Hong Kong) and 1O1O sell similar dual-number add-ons. Confirm terms with the carrier.
4. Physical SIM: forget it
The iPhone Air has no SIM tray. A mainland store SIM is not an option unless you bring a second phone or a pocket Wi-Fi box.
Setup that actually works
- Confirm the model. Settings → General → About → part number. A3517 is Hong Kong / international iPhone Air. A3518 is mainland.
- Confirm unlocked. Same screen: Carrier Lock should say “No SIM Restrictions,” or a third-party travel eSIM won’t install.
- Move your Hong Kong number. Apple lists eSIM Quick Transfer for 1O1O, 3, 3SUPREME, ClubSIM, csl and SmarTone. China Mobile Hong Kong, CUniq and HKBN use QR codes or apps instead.
- Install travel eSIMs in Hong Kong. You need Wi-Fi or data to download a profile. Doing it at home beats fighting it at the border.
- Wire the lines. Settings → Cellular. Turn Data Roaming on for the line that carries data; set Cellular Data to that line. If a travel eSIM does the data, keep the Hong Kong line for SMS and kill Data Roaming on it. On iOS 26+, the phone may prompt “Turn On Travel eSIM” when you arrive.
- Set up apps before you leave. WeChat takes overseas numbers. Shanghai’s Alipay visitor guide says you can register with a foreign number and link a foreign card. Keep the Hong Kong line able to receive SMS.
- APN usually auto-configures. If data fails, check the provider’s APN notes.
Quick answers
Can a mainland store activate a China Unicom eSIM on my Hong Kong iPhone Air? No. Apple blocks it, and the October 2025 store test died at IMEI check.
Should I buy a mainland iPhone Air instead? Only if you mostly live on the mainland. The A3518 can hold two mainland eSIMs and use local eSIMs abroad, but it can’t install non-mainland eSIMs while inside the mainland — awkward for frequent cross-border users.
Will Google, WhatsApp and Instagram work? Usually yes on Hong Kong roaming and on travel eSIMs that route outside the mainland. Usually no on mainland Wi-Fi and mainland SIMs.
Is any of this permanent? No. MIIT’s approval is still framed as a commercial trial. Apple’s supported-model list has already grown since 2025, and carrier prices move. Recheck before you travel.
